U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall, the top Democrat on House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and U.S. Sens. Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin announced Monday that the Raleigh County Airport Authority will get $147,000 in federal funds to improve its runways and surface areas.

"Some shortsighted people argue that we cannot afford the upkeep, much less improve the long-term potential of our country's transportation system," Rahall said. "This funding underscores the need for a federal role in making certain our nation's basic infrastructure works so America can compete in the global economy."

Rahall said he is committed to improving roads and airports in Southern West Virginia, particularly as the area prepares "for the increased traffic the Boy Scout High Adventure Center will generate here."

Bordering the New River Gorge National River in Fayette County, the new 10,600-acre reserve will offer Boy Scouts from across the country opportunities including: rock climbing, mountain biking and whitewater rafting.

Rockefeller, who chairs the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, said airports "provide a critical gateway for businesses and economic development in West Virginia's communities."

Manchin said, "It's time that we invest in rebuilding America.... Reliable transportation helps us attract residents and businesses to West Virginia."
