PIT: Express lane added at airport security
Pittsburgh International Airport will offer a special security checkpoint lane for travelers with one or no carry-on bag starting on Tuesday, officials said.
"This move comes as a result of more people carrying more items through the checkpoint to avoid airline bag fees," Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Brad Penrod said in a written statement on Friday.
Joseph Terrell, security director for the Transportation Security Administration in Pittsburgh, said airline fees prompted many passengers to take more -- and larger -- bags onto planes instead of checking them at ticket counters. That led to longer wait times in security checkpoint lines, he said.
Officials will locate the Express Lane on the right side of the main security checkpoint in the airport's check-in terminal. Current lanes at the main and alternate checkpoints will remain.
To use the Express Lane, travelers can have no more than one carry-on bag, including purses, brief cases and computer cases. Travelers also will be permitted to carry a jacket through the special lane. The bags can't be larger than 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches.
