REDLANDS - The second annual Redlands Airshow is planned for Oct.8 at Redlands Municipal Airport, with gates opening at 9 a.m. Admission is $5 for ages 12 and older, and parking is free.
"We're very excited," said Angela Hoover, who along with husband, Cliff, is part of the airshow committee. "This year's show is going to be bigger and better than ever before."
In addition to the shows in the air, many attractions will be on the ground.
There will be a classic car show and children's activities, with bounce houses and a climbing wall.
There will even be a ground vs. air race, with a plane and classic car vying for fastest vehicle.
The Redlands Police Department will be there, with its own ground display, and will show how its helicopter impacts the community.
"This year there is more ground activity, more people participating and more planes flying than last year," Hoover said.
Several vendors will be on hand to sell their wares, including airport neighbor Hangar 24 to the Stockyard BBQ and Steakhouse, Johnny's Tacos and Mill Creek Cattle Co.
Although a recent plane crash on Sessums Drive and crashes at two U.S. airshows last weekend have left a pall on airshows, Hoover and the rest of the committee say they have taken extra safety precautions, and are ready for the show to go on.
"Only one plane is up in the air at a time, and we make sure there's no chance that another plane is in the area," she said. "There's a strict timeline and place location."
Plus the pilots perform over the nearby Santa Ana River wash, not over the crowds.
"This is a community event," she said. "We want to educate families about the importance of aviation, (and) get the younger generation interested in flying."
