What Do You Want Out of a Maintenance Association?

I have written on this subject previously ... but it is so important that I will continue to harp on it until adequate participation is achieved and a true consensus is established. Every technician I talk to or correspond with agrees maintenance technicians need a “voice†in Washington where regulations affecting their livelihood and how they do their jobs is created and controlled. From here there is a plethora of differing views and objectives. Some advocate a “union-like†association that would promote higher pay. Others abhor any activity that would appear in the least way to be union-like. Some see the association as being more fraternal, as opposed to a business-like structure. Others see no need for a “national presence, whereas others see that as the overall goal. Regardless of these differing views, I believe it is up to each and every one of you to ensure a consensus is achieved for this objective. This requires a grass-roots effort with much dialogue. For years technicians have been told where they should fit in the system. I think it is time for technicians to launch their own place by creating an association that truly reflects their needs and desires. Please write me and tell me what you would like to see. For the moment lets use this medium to establish a common ground on which most can agree. Tell me what you think an association should do for you. What would you be willing to pay to support such an association? How often should participation in meetings be required? What would be the primary goals? Where should the leadership come from? What kind of structure would work best for you? Should there be a national convention, one that you might attend, or should the focus be on regional meetings? What should be the focus of any meetings? I am sure you can come up with much more. Let’s hear from you. Maybe we can get something going that makes sense for all. Maybe we can support and improve what is already out there. It requires so little effort; once you establish a consensus there are many others in the industry that will assist in establishing “your association.â€
