ITW GSE Streamlines Quality Procedures

Aug. 22, 2019
The process included sharing working instructions, cross-training staff and ensuring paperwork, but ITW GSE achieved the objectives it set out to accomplish.

For quite some years, the ITW GSE facilities in the US and in Denmark were certified according to the ISO 9001 quality norm, however as independent business units. To ensure that customers ordering an ITW GSE 2400 GPU will get precisely the same product quality no matter where the product is manufactured, ITW GSE decided to streamline the processes and quality guide lines.

This process that included sharing working instructions, doing cross-training of staff, ensuring paperwork and all what it takes, obviously took quite some time, but at the end of the day, ITW GSE achieved the objectives set out, claims Poul Elvstroem, Vice President Sales & Marketing.

“We even went so far that we have now identical production set-ups at both manufacturing facilities. A true team effort took us there, and finally, shortly before the summer holidays, we could boast ourselves of becoming certified as one global division according to the ISO 9001:2015 quality assurance system, he says.

Small, Powerful and Green with Third Party Certification

The ITW GSE 2400 ground power unit, core product of ITW GSE, has an extremely high efficiency (94 percent), no CO2 emissions at the place of work and low noise levels. This means that the 2400 solid-state GPUs (including the 2400 Power Coil) are the greenest they can be; much to the benefit the airport, the passengers and the airport staff.

The 2400 series is the market’s smallest GPU no matter which configuration is preferred – mobile, bridge-mounted or fixed, but in spite of the size, the 2400 GPUs can easily power narrow- and wide-body aircraft including the Airbus A380, A350, the Boeing 787 and the B777. The 2400 has all kinds of outstanding technical qualities from the unique output voltage, the smart ITW GSE user interface, software update via USB and the standard overload capabilities that matches all types of aircraft. Furthermore, the ITW GSE 2400 fulfills the ISO 6858 standard regarding voltage imbalance and phase displacement at the aircraft plug. As the first manufacturer, ITW did the effort and received third party approval of this fact.

The 2400 series makes sure that airports can keep meeting new and changing customer demands well into the future. In addition, all ITW GSE's solid-state GPUs are of modular design which eases maintenance and fault-finding. Since the units do not contain moving parts subject to wear and tear, the overall maintenance costs are very low and so is the total cost of ownership.

Voltage Quality at the Aircraft Plug

Fixed installations often include a mix of long symmetrical and asymmetrical cables and connection boxes that makes it difficult to keep the required 115 ± 3V voltage quality at the aircraft connector- right where it matters.

This is exactly where ITW GSE’s patented Plug & Play feature makes a difference. The Plug & Play system automatically and instantly compensates for voltage drops along whatever cables without the need to connect a load bank. The Plug & Play limits delays and ensures on-time departures – it even allows for longer cable distances.
