We’re in this Together

Inclusive and approachable leaders help foster accountability and safety.

There’s a lot of conversation about leadership this time of year among the Ground Support Worldwide team.

Our discussions stem from reviewing candidates for the Leaders of the Year awards. With so many worthy candidates across the industry, selecting our award winners is a challenging task.

As you read in this issue’s cover story, Bob Fleschert is a confident leader with strong opinions. Yet, he remains approachable. It’s important that team members feel comfortable approaching their supervisor with problems, concerns and questions.

That point was emphasized in American Aero FTW’s account of gaining IS-BAH Stage III certification. In the Industry Expert Column, Heath Barnett pointed out the importance of a just culture and shared accountability within an organization.

Both examples in this month’s issue are important reminders that aviation safety, including ground support, relies on team work. Everyone must do their part to help achieve a common goal.

A working environment that shares responsibility and allows for personal accountability provides opportunities for growth and continued learning.

No one has all the answers, but a collaborative group with multiple points of view can overcome a lot of challenges.

Reflect on your organization. Are there ways to foster professional growth? Doing so may have a positive effect on overall safety.
