Düsseldorf and Stuttgart airports have launched a joint procurement process for up to 26 electric apron passenger buses as the German airports continue to electrify ground operations.

Flughafen Düsseldorf Ground Handling GmbH and Flughafen Stuttgart GmbH are conducting the procurement jointly, although each airport will enter into a separate contract for its portion of the order.

The tender is divided into two lots. Düsseldorf plans to purchase 10 electric apron buses, while Stuttgart is seeking up to 16.

Stuttgart's procurement includes an initial firm order for six buses, with additional vehicles available through optional orders. The first buses are expected to be delivered by Oct. 31, 2027, with subsequent deliveries extending through 2030.

Düsseldorf's 10 buses are expected to be delivered in stages through 2029.

The airports are seeking vehicles designed specifically for passenger transportation on the apron and capable of meeting applicable aviation, safety and operational requirements.

Bids will be evaluated based on both cost and performance. Price will account for 60% of the evaluation and will include the purchase price as well as anticipated maintenance costs over three years and energy costs based on 2,500 operating hours per bus.

Quality and performance characteristics will account for the remaining 40%.

The joint purchasing effort comes as airports across Europe continue replacing conventionally powered ground support and passenger transportation equipment with electric alternatives.

Applications to participate in the procurement process are due Sept. 29.
