IATA Updates Ground Operations Standards for Autonomous GSE and Ramp Safety

The 47th edition of the Airport Handling Manual (AHM) expands autonomous GSE requirements to address battery lifecycle cost analysis, cybersecurity, fire suppression, equipment markings and owner and user information.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released its 2027 cargo and ground operations manuals, introducing expanded guidance for autonomous ground support equipment, revised ramp-safety procedures and new training requirements for ground handling personnel.

The 47th edition of the Airport Handling Manual (AHM) expands autonomous GSE requirements to address battery lifecycle cost analysis, cybersecurity, fire suppression, equipment markings and owner and user information. It also adds specifications for geospatial information used by autonomous equipment.

The revisions clarify compatibility requirements for GSE operating across different aircraft types, including distinctions between active and passive aircraft damage reduction systems. They also call for risk assessments before equipment is used across aircraft types and expand specifications for nose gear towbar tractors operating above the category rating required for an aircraft.

The updated IATA Ground Operations Manual (IGOM) introduces a “no-touch” policy for GSE not designed to contact aircraft, with reinforced guidance on safe distances. Other changes include mandatory brake checks within Equipment Restraint Areas, clearer driving and parking controls, and additional safety provisions for passenger boarding bridges.

The IGOM revisions also strengthen loading and unloading procedures, including final cargo hold inspections to verify compliance and the absence of foreign object debris. New guidance addresses forklift operations, ULD loader platform use, cargo door sill guards and operations during sandstorms, heavy precipitation and flooding.

Training requirements have also been revised under AHM 1110, with updated job-role applicability and new modules covering cargo warehouse handling, ULD build-up, freighter loading supervision, fueling and defueling coordination, potable water services and lavatory services.

IATA is also expanding the digital tools connected to its manuals. Its Digital Load Verification tool is designed to verify aircraft loading activities and, according to the association, can reduce loading errors by more than 80% and loading-related delays by up to 30%.

“Our 2027 manual revisions reflect advancements in technology, regulation, and customer needs,” said Frederic Leger, IATA’s senior vice president of products and services. “As our manuals are used in a more digitally connected environment, we are focusing on creating tools that integrate them into the critical processes and activities that underpin cargo and ground operations.”

Additional revisions to the Dangerous Goods Regulations address battery packaging, spare batteries, power banks and lithium battery-powered mobility aids. The Battery Shipping Regulations introduce provisions for hybrid lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries, while the Live Animals Regulations include updated aircraft cargo compartment cleaning and disinfection procedures.
