An Air China Boeing 747-8 was damaged during a ground refueling operation at John F. Kennedy International Airport Aug. 31 after a refueling vehicle moved while servicing the aircraft.

Air China confirmed the incident Sept. 2, saying the refueling vehicle moved abnormally during ground operations for Flight CA982, damaging aircraft components and preventing the flight from operating as scheduled.

Published reports and video circulating online indicate the vehicle moved while refueling hoses were still connected to the aircraft. The movement reportedly pulled the hoses from the aircraft's fuel connections, damaging components and causing fuel to spill onto the apron.

No injuries were reported.

The aircraft was scheduled to operate Flight CA982 from New York to Beijing. Air China canceled the flight following the incident and activated contingency plans to assist affected passengers.

Air China has not publicly detailed the extent of the damage or explained why the refueling vehicle moved. No investigation findings from U.S. authorities have been released.
