Pentastar Aviation Deploys Autonomous Wingwalking Robots
Pentastar Aviation has begun deploying autonomous wingwalking robots from Airtrek Robotics in its ground operations, becoming the first aviation company to integrate the technology into day-to-day operations.
The robots are designed to assist during aircraft towing by moving alongside the aircraft and monitoring the surrounding environment for potential obstacles. The technology provides ground crews with additional visibility while maneuvering aircraft on ramps and inside hangars.
Traditionally, wingwalkers are positioned near an aircraft’s wings during towing operations to monitor clearance, identify hazards and communicate with the tug operator. Pentastar said the autonomous system is intended to complement the judgment and operational experience of ground crews while automating portions of the wingwalking process.
“Our high standard for safety requires precision and constant awareness, and Airtrek has created a solution that complements our crew and their expertise,” said Ben Hammond, vice president of FBO services at Pentastar Aviation.
Pentastar also provided operational input during development of the technology, helping Airtrek Robotics refine the system for use in aviation environments.
“Pentastar brought that real-world perspective to our development process, lending essential operational expertise that enabled us to refine how this technology works in practice,” said Chris Lee, co-founder and CEO of Airtrek Robotics.
The autonomous wingwalking robots are being deployed in Pentastar’s operations this month, with full implementation expected by the fourth quarter of 2026.
