Oct. 3—When traveling through a "mega airport," just about everyone could use a bit of assistance, and those with hidden disabilities at Metro Airport can plan on discreetly getting it without having to say a word.

The airport has launched its Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program to cater to the needs of passengers with deficiencies who might struggle with approaching authorities and asking for help.

The disability can be physical, mental or neurological.

Those passengers can signal silently that assistance might be needed by displaying a specially designed green and yellow sunflower lanyard or wristband.

Metro airport customers can get a lanyard or wristband by contacting Airport Authority via email or by arranging for a mail delivery or pickup during business hours.

They are free of charge.

This program is being presented in addition to the existing programs already in place.

Customers must still notify their airline if a wheelchair is needed or other accommodations while traveling.

In addition to that, travelers can always request assistance through screening checkpoints by speaking with a TSA officer upon arrival at the airport or by calling the TSA Cares helpline (855-787-2227) prior to their trip.

The program is recognized in more than 160 airports worldwide, including in more than 50 states in the U.S., according to airport officials.

Airport officials are striving to enhance the customer experience by introducing this and other programs.

Chad Newton, airport CEO, views this as a valuable service to offer customers with special needs.

"We hope the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program will help travelers across the disability community feel even more welcome at DTW," Newton said. "We want our customers to know they're supported."

To request a lanyard or wristband by emailing Matt Virost, community outreach manager, at [email protected] to arrange for delivery or pickup during business hours.
