A4A Urges DHS to Work Collaboratively with Stakeholders on Enhanced Global Security Measures
WASHINGTON, June 28, 2017 – Airlines for America (A4A), the industry trade organization for the leading U.S. airlines, today urged the Administration to maintain its focus on a risk-based approach to aviation security, and to work collaboratively with airlines and airports to effectively implement the new security directives outlined by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
“We recognize and share DHS’s commitment to addressing threats to aviation security. U.S. airlines not only share that commitment, but have substantial, practical expertise on these matters as we work every day to protect our passengers, crew, aircraft and the public,” said A4A President and CEO Nicholas E. Calio. “While we have been assured that carriers will have the substantial flexibility necessary to implement these measures on a global scale, we believe that the development of the security directive should have been subject to a greater degree of collaboration and coordination to avoid the significant operational disruptions and unnecessarily frustrating consequences for the traveling public that appear likely to happen.”
A4A and its members have repeatedly made clear that they are ready and willing to work with the Administration to address our concerns about the feasibility of meeting a worldwide directive. They urge the Administration to pursue a risk-based, intelligence-driven plan to implement enhanced security measures where the risk analysis determines they are most appropriate.
