JetBlue Raises Checked Bag Fees As Fuel Costs Climb
JetBlue has increased checked bag fees as rising jet fuel costs put additional pressure on airline operating expenses.
For most domestic economy travelers, the first checked bag now costs $39 during off-peak periods, up from $35, while the fee rises to $49 during peak travel periods, up from $40, according to media reports. The airline also raised the cost of a second checked bag to $59 during off-peak periods and $69 during peak periods. Customers who pay for checked bags less than 24 hours before departure will pay an additional $10 per bag.
JetBlue said the changes took effect Monday and are intended to help offset higher operating costs while allowing the carrier to keep base fares competitive. In statements cited by multiple news outlets, the airline said adjusting fees for optional services used by select customers helps support fare competitiveness and continued investment in the customer experience.
The fee increases come as airlines contend with sharply higher fuel prices tied to the war involving Iran, which has disrupted oil markets and added pressure to global aviation costs. Reports said jet fuel prices have climbed more than 80% since the conflict began in late February, while airlines also face operational challenges linked to airspace disruptions and longer routings in parts of the Middle East.
Industry analysts told news outlets that U.S. carriers are more likely to pass higher fuel costs on through ancillary charges, such as baggage and seat fees, rather than impose formal fuel surcharges. Once one airline raises fees, competitors often follow.
JetBlue said some customers will continue to receive a free first checked bag, including certain co-branded credit card holders and TrueBlue loyalty members at qualifying tiers. Most customers on transatlantic flights will also still receive their first checked bag free.
