EU Countries Oblige Airlines to Make Greater Use of Landing Rights
Brussels — Airlines have to make greater use of their take-off and landing rights in the European Union to avoid losing them, European Union countries decided on Monday.
After exemptions granted during the Covid-19 pandemic, the decision marks a gradual return to standard rules for the use of runway slots in the bloc.
Airlines will have to use 75% of their slots this winter, compared to the standard quota of 80%.
The rules intended to ensure fair competition foresee that airlines must make use of their slots at popular airports in order to keep them.
Last week the ambassadors to the EU had already agreed to the new quota which still needed the backing of EU ministers.
