GREEN, Ohio – Spirit Airlines has delayed the resumption of service at the Akron-Canton Airport until next spring.

The carrier was originally expected to restart flying from CAK to Orlando International Airport next month. Lisa Dalpiaz, vice president of marketing and air service development, said she was informed Monday that Spirit planned to push back the start date until May 3.

The carrier suspended service at the Summit County airport last June, part of a nationwide reduction in flights in response to a pilot shortage and other operational issues.

“They have continued constraints on their network,” said Dalpiaz.

Spirit started flying from Akron- Canton in 2016 and has offered numerous nonstop routes since then, including service to Tampa and Fort Myers, Florida, and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. In recent months, however, Spirit has reduced its network from Akron- Canton to just Orlando.

Spirit also flies from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, with nonstop service to 12 cities.

The Plain Dealer/cleveland.com reached out to Spirit Airlines for comment.

Dalpiaz noted that Allegiant Air last week started flying between Akron- Canton and Orlando Sanford Airport, which is located about 30 miles northeast of downtown Orlando. That flight runs twice per week, on Thursdays and Sundays.

In addition, Breeze Airways last week launched nonstop service between Akron- Canton and Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas. That flight also runs twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays.

Akron- Canton currently has four airlines flying to 15 destinations. Year to date through August, Akron- Canton has welcomed 361,361 passengers in 2022, up 40% over the same period last year.
