Houston Welcomes New Non-Stop Flights to Cancun and Vegas from Discount Airline
Feb. 2—Getting out of Houston for a sun-soaked Cancun weekend just got a lot easier.
Budget-friendly Sun Country airlines just announced that that the company is adding 16 new nonstop routes in 9 cities, and Houston landed two of those new routes. Travelers will now get to head out from Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport to Cancun starting May 27, according to Sun Country Airlines. For those who love a strictly Vegas adventure, Sun Country plans to launch a route from Houston to Las Vegas beginning September 2.
While most Americans are barred from heading to international destinations including much of Europe due to COVID-19 pandemic, there are still a few places they can travel. Countries like Mexico, Belize and Bermuda are all open to U.S. citizens, according to CNN's Forrest Brown and Brekke Fletcher. If you do decide to head over to Cancun, expect temperature checks and other screenings upon arrival. One caveat, you must have a negative COVID-19 test result to return to the U.S.
"The past year has been a challenge for the travel industry but increased access to COVID-19 tests and vaccinations, we're starting to see that turnaround," Sun Country Airlines CEO Jude Bricker said in a statement.
If you're ready for a white-sand beach getaway, flights from IAH to Cancun average $360 a roundtrip and operate twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays. For Vegas fans, flights average $237 roundtrip and run twice a week on Thursdays and Sundays.
Beyond Houston, Sun Country announced it will launch its first nonstop flight from San Antonio to Cancun starting May 28, with flights running on Mondays and Fridays. Dallas/Fort Worth will also get a new nonstop flight to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, beginning on May 28.
