Nov. 24—United Airlines is adding another policy to the rolling list of COVID-19 precautions the airline is implementing for international passengers flying during the pandemic.

Beginning Dec. 7, passengers traveling from George Bush Intercontinental Airport to 10 international destinations will be able to start their vacation immediately upon arrival, thanks to a self-collected, mail-in COVID-19 test taken beforehand.

The tests, administered by Advanced Diagnostic Laboratory, are $119 and processed at their testing site in San Antonio.

"Widespread testing is key to unlocking international borders and safely reopening global travel," Toby Enqvist, chief customer officer for United, said in a press release. "This is particularly important for our customers in Houston, who rely on United to keep them connected with their family and friends in Latin America and the Caribbean."

The international destinations include Aruba, Belize, Guatemala, Peru, Bahamas, Panama, Honduras and El Salvador.

For those wishing to avoid self-quarantine, United will reach out 14 days ahead of takeoff to provide instructions on ordering a test and completing the process. The self-collection kit includes a plastic tube, a nasal swab, and instructions on how to properly collect a specimen.

"As the energy capital of the world and most diverse city in the United States, Houston plays an influential role in linking global economies," said Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, adding that although a vaccine would be the ultimate solution, "United's expansion of its customer testing program is a step in the right direction. I commend United for their leadership and forward-thinking."

Customers are advised to take the tests 72 hours before departure and should look forward to receiving results within two days of mailing in their test.
