The South Jersey Transportation Authority (SJTA) and Global Crossing Airlines announced an agreement Wednesday night that could boost tourism and bring gamblers to Atlantic City with flights staring in 2021.

In a statement, Global Crossing Airlines, also known as Global X, signed an airport and terminal use agreement with the SJTA, the entity that operates the Atlantic City International Airport. Global X is also looking at potentially signing a land-lease agreement to develop a new hanger and maintenance facility at the airport.

“We are thrilled Global X has chosen ACY for their northern charter base of operations,” SJTA Executive Director Stephen F. Dougherty said in the statement. “We look forward to working with GlobalX on developing a presence at the airport, within Atlantic County, and throughout the South Jersey region.”

Global X also stated it intends to operate charter routes to the Egg Harbor Township-based airport from Toronto and Montreal, as well as some cities in the United States beginning in the summer of 2021 to help support the hotel and casino businesses in Atlantic City.

Currently, Spirit Airlines operates as the only commercial airline. According to the SJTA, more than 1.1 million passengers utilized the airport in 2019.
