Stockholm (dpa) - Low-cost airline Norwegian Air on Wednesday said it would resume flights to a number of European destinations from July 1.

Among the destinations are London, Paris and Barcelona, as well as popular holiday spots in Croatia, Greece and Spain, and several destinations in Norway.

In March, the airline halted 95 per cent of its flights due to the coronavirus pandemic and around 7,650 employees - 80 per cent of the workforce - were placed on temporary leave.

Norwegian has now said over 300 pilots and 600 cabin crew from its bases in Norway will operate 20 aircraft for the 76 routes that will be serviced. Since April, the airline has only operated eight aircraft on domestic routes in Norway.

"As competition in the industry begins to recover over the summer period, Norwegian will be in a position to continue to offer our customers great value and service while contributing to the gradual yet important return to normality for both the tourism sector and society as a whole," chief executive Jacob Schram said.

As part of measures to reduce the risk of infection onboard, travellers from age 6 and above are to wear a face mask. Passengers are also urged to keep their distance when boarding and leaving the plane, and hand luggage has to be placed under the seat in front of each passenger to avoid queues forming in the aisles. There will also be no catering onboard.
