Frankfurt (dpa) - A flight operated by Lufthansa's budget subsidiary Eurowings was turned away from Sardinia's Olbia Airport after airline officials in Dusseldorf failed to check whether it had reopened, an airline spokesman said on Monday.

The Airbus A320 took off from Dusseldorf on Saturday but was refused landing permission and sent back home. Olbia is set to open only on June 24 as part of an easing of coronavirus restrictions.

The spokesman acknowledged that Eurowings should have been aware of the fact, as it was shown on the standard "Notice to Airmen" (Notam) that all involved should have read.

The passengers on the flight - all two of them - were switched to another flight.
