Lufthansa Subsidiary Swiss Plans to Start Flying Again in June
Vienna (dpa) - Switzerland's main carrier, Swiss, plans to partially relaunch operations in June, with flights to 41 European destinations, the Lufthansa subsidiary announced on Thursday.
In addition, Swiss plans to offer several international connections, also from June, to cities such as Tokyo, Hong Kong, Johannesburg and Chicago.
In contrast, Lufthansa's other subsidiary, Austrian, has no definite plans for lift-off yet.
While the Swiss parliament has approved state-backed loans worth 1.5 billion Swiss francs (1.6 billion dollars) for Swiss and its sister airline, Edelweiss, Austria's government is still in negotiations with Lufthansa about bailing out Austrian.
Austrian said on Thursday in Vienna that its fleet would remain grounded until June 7, and that it would consider when to resume operations sometime that month.
"When the demand is right and the travel restrictions fall, we want to fly again" Austrian's chief commercial officer Andreas Otto said in a statement.
Lufthansa said last week that is will roughly double its own schedule in June, putting 160 planes into the air to carry passengers to 106 domestic and foreign destinations.
