Delta Airlines to Upsize Aircraft Serving Duluth

Passengers flying from Duluth to the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport soon will have the opportunity to book seats with a little more leg room and a few more amenities.

Beginning March 13, Delta Airlines will swap out the 50-seat regional jets that had been flying the route with a much larger two-cabin Boeing 717 for the daily first flight out of Duluth and last flight into the city.

The new jet offers 110 seats, including 12 in first class, 20 "Delta Comfort"-sized and 78 in the "main cabin" class. The 717 also will provide inflight wireless internet and in-seat power.

Delta serves Duluth International Airport with six daily flights out of Duluth and will continue to rely on 50-seater regional jets for most of its schedule. However, the reintroduction of a Boeing 717 to the mix will mark the first time larger mainline aircraft from Delta have returned to Duluth since their intermittent use in 2016.

Natalie Peterson, communications and marketing director for the Duluth International Airport, issued a statement Wednesday: "We are excited by Delta's decision to reintroduce mainline service to or customers in the region. The arrival of the B717 shows the confidence Delta has in this market and has recognized the rise in passengers deciding to #FlyLocal at DLH."

This story was updated at 12:35 p.m. to clarify that Delta Airlines had not used larger mainline aircraft in Duluth since 2016.
