Hamburg (dpa) - The German airline Lufthansa and its subsidiary Swiss will in the future get sustainable fuel at the US airport of San Francisco for their flights headed to Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich.

The energy company Shell and the US biofuel provider World Energy have agreed a long-term collaboration to develop a supply of sustainable fuel, Shell announced on Tuesday.

The contract with the Lufthansa Group for San Francisco, which covers a volume of 3.8 million litres, is one of the most significant globally for the supply of sustainable fuel, according to Shell.

"The supply will reduce Lufthansa's carbon emissions on intercontinental flights," the energy company said in a statement.

The sustainable fuel is produced with agricultural waste fats and oils at a World Energy refinery in California. They are mixed with up to 30 per cent of traditional jet fuel.

The aviation sector contributes slightly less than 3 per cent to global carbon dioxide emissions and has struggled so far to improve its climate footprint.

It has focused mostly on energy-saving engines and mitigating measures. The development of sustainable synthetic fuels is still in its infancy; a market-ready solution is not yet within reach.
