Philadelphia Airport Workers Elect to Unionize

The vote to join Service Employees International Union Local 32BJ was approved 406-58.

PHILADELPHIA — Baggage handlers and other contracted ground services employees at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) have voted to unionize late last week.

According to an Associated Press report, Service Employees International Union Local 32BJ had tried to organize subcontracted workers at PHL, conducting walkouts and other protests. The report stated the vote to unionize was approved 406-58.

The AP said Philadelphia's mayor, Jim Kenney, joined workers at a rally Thursday afternoon at the airport.

The Philadelphia Tribune reported additional details, noting the union hopes to start contract negotiations soon with contractors PrimeFlight and Prospect.
