Beijing — China will place export controls on certain materials, software and technology related to the aerospace and aviation sectors starting July 1, the Commerce Ministry said on Thursday, citing national security grounds.

The new restrictions are not aimed at specific countries, a ministry spokesperson said, adding that the policy was line with "international practices."

Specific products and technology - largely related to aerospace structural components and engine manufacturing - will no longer be able to be exported without prior authorization from entities such as the Central Military Commission.

How far-reaching a trade impact the measure will have was initially unclear.

China had already imposed export controls on certain raw materials, such as graphite, which are essential in the production of batteries for electric vehicles.

The United States recently imposed tariffs on Chinese products such as electric vehicles and semiconductors. China in turn sanctioned US defence manufacturers that supplied Taiwan.
