Eastman Turbo Oil 2197 Reaches Significant Milestone

Turbo Oil Achieves 300 Million In Service Hours

Kingsport, TN, March 10, 2015 – Eastman Turbo Oil 2197, the world’s leading high performance turbo oil, has achieved more than 300 million engine/accessory hours of successful operation, demonstrating the product’s proven performance and trusted reliability.

The newly rebranded Eastman Turbo Oil 2197, formally BPTO 2197, is designed to exceed the demands of current and future turbine engines, and is the oil of choice for any aircraft or rotorcraft that operate on High-Performance Capable (HPC) oils. It was the first oil approved to the AS5780 specification, and exceeds many of the thermal stability and cleanliness requirements of the High Performance Capable class within the AS55780 specification.

The heritage development of Eastman Turbo Oil 2197 dates back to the early 1990s.  At that time, there was a clear need to address issues associated with oil-related carbon deposits, known as “coking”, which can restrict or block oil flow, contributing to engine failures and shutdowns. Reducing coking can be a key factor in safe and smooth aircraft and rotorcraft operation.

“Even though the product was first introduced over 15 years ago it continues to exceed expectations and performance demands of the engines it is used in, so we are very proud of this milestone,” said Rodger Harris, Eastman Aviation Solutions Global Sales Director. “Surpassing 300 million in-service hours is a clear testament to the fact that Eastman Turbo Oil 2197 still represents the cleanest, high-performance turbine oil on the market.”

The success of the Eastman Turbo Oil 2197 can be traced back to the innovative approach taken during the development of the product.

“A unique and very specialized testing rig was designed and constructed, which we refer to as the ‘Coker Mister’.  This innovation provided a testing environment to accurately simulate harsh engine operating conditions in a laboratory. This allowed for continuous testing and analyzing of coking and oil performance over many simulated flights,” said Dr. Andrew Markson, Eastman Aviation Fluids Technology Director.

“Many thousands of labor hours went into designing and evaluating Eastman Turbo Oil 2197 during its development, resulting in the most proven and trusted product on the market today, and we fully expect to celebrate many more milestones like this one,” concluded Dr. Markson.

Approved by all leading engine manufacturers, Eastman Turbo Oil 2197 is qualified to MIL-PRF-23699 High Thermal Stability (HTS) class and is the most widely used HTS fleet oil in the world. Eastman Turbo Oil 2197 is manufactured in the Eastman Aviation Solutions facility to ensure worldwide quality and consistency for the globally available product.
