ACI World Launches First Edition of the ACI Apron Safety Handbook

Montreal, 21 December 2015 – Airports Council International (ACI) World's Safety and Technical Standing Committee has announced the launch of the First Edition of the ACI Apron Safety Handbook. This indispensable resource brings together best practices in managing apron safety by drawing on the current expertise of airport operators around the world, and provides a comprehensive set of guidelines to enhance safety, improve operations and prevent or reduce accidents, incidents and occurrences on the apron.
With the growth in worldwide air traffic, apron operations have become increasingly complex. More and larger aircraft, changes in ground support equipment and faster turnaround times all contribute to the challenge of enhancing apron safety. The Apron Safety Handbook provides aerodrome operators with best practices on establishing a programme that covers all the major aspects of apron safety; offering safety best practices for planning and design; presents standard apron operations procedures and requirements; and gives recommendations for construction in apron areas and the maintenance of apron infrastructure.
The new Apron Safety Handbook is derived from Chapter 2 of the ACI Airside Safety Handbook (4th edition, 2010), which has been divided into three separate Handbooks: Runway Safety (published in 2014); Apron Safety; and SMS (in development). The expanded, standalone handbooks have been designed to give ACI members more robust safety guidance by offering more detailed information on each of the subjects.
