ACI World Launches First Edition of the ACI Apron Safety Handbook
Dec. 22, 2015
Montreal, 21 December 2015 – Airports Council International (ACI) World's Safety and Technical Standing Committee has announced the launch of the First Edition of the ACI Apron Safety Handbook. This indispensable resource brings together best practices in managing apron safety by drawing on the current expertise of airport operators around the world, and provides a comprehensive set of guidelines to enhance safety, improve operations and prevent or reduce accidents, incidents and occurrences on the apron.
With the growth in worldwide air traffic, apron operations have become increasingly complex. More and larger aircraft, changes in ground support equipment and faster turnaround times all contribute to the challenge of enhancing apron safety. The Apron Safety Handbook provides aerodrome operators with best practices on establishing a programme that covers all the major aspects of apron safety; offering safety best practices for planning and design; presents standard apron operations procedures and requirements; and gives recommendations for construction in apron areas and the maintenance of apron infrastructure.
The new Apron Safety Handbook is derived from Chapter 2 of the ACI Airside Safety Handbook (4th edition, 2010), which has been divided into three separate Handbooks: Runway Safety (published in 2014); Apron Safety; and SMS (in development). The expanded, standalone handbooks have been designed to give ACI members more robust safety guidance by offering more detailed information on each of the subjects.
"Safety is our top priority at ACI, and the Apron Safety Handbook is an indispensable resource for airports looking to enhance safety on the apron, one of the most dynamic and demanding areas at the airport," said Angela Gittens, Director General, ACI World. "With the pending publication of the SMS Handbook in early 2016 and the already released Runway Safety Handbook, airports will have three comprehensive reference manuals from which to draw, each containing the very latest in best practice guidance."
Airports Council International (ACI), the trade association of the world's airports, was founded in 1991 with the objective of fostering cooperation among its member airports and other partners in world aviation, including the International Civil Aviation Organization, the International Air Transport Association and the Civil Air Navigation Services Organization. In representing the best interests of airports during key phases of policy development, ACI makes a significant contribution toward ensuring a global air transport system that is safe, secure, efficient and environmentally sustainable.
