$90,000 From Lockheed Martin to Tuskegee University Will Support Engineering Program for High School Students
TUSKEGEE, Ala. (November 9, 2015) — Industrial giant Lockheed Martin is making an investment in the next generation of Tuskegee University engineers. The company has given $90,000 to support the institution’s Freshman Accelerated Start up and Training for Retention in Engineering Curricula program. Known as FASTREC, for nearly 30 years, this eight-week program has offered to high school graduates who are interested in engineering careers a head start on their goals.
Each summer, FASTREC students pursue an intensive course of study in mathematics, science, engineering, graphics, and freshman orientation. The program provides students with an early opportunity to begin their engineering career and earn up to seven credits toward for a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering. The participants also are awarded full tuition and book scholarships for the program.
Dr. Heshmat Aglan, interim dean of the College of Engineering, said the donation will be used to fund tuition, scholarships, books and supplies.
"Tuskegee University thanks Lockheed Martin for their support of the FASTREC program which is a staple in the College of Engineering program that prepares students for successful matriculation, retention and persistence," said Dr. Brian L. Johnson, Tuskegee University president.
