Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, IA, will now begin offering an Avionics Electronic Technician program. The only program of its kind in the state and one of the few in the Midwest. The Avionics Electronic Technician Program is a 3 term, 9 month diploma program that will help develop in-depth knowledge of aircraft avionic systems down to the component level.
This program prepares students for a career as an aircraft avionics technician, aircraft electrician, aircraft avionics component repairmen, electrical/avionics installer, and flight line troubleshooter.
The students will build skills by troubleshooting, removing, and repairing faulty components as well as practicing Federal Aviation Administration approved wiring techniques.
Successful completion of this program will allow the student to take the Federal Communications Commission’s GROL (General Radio Operators License) exam elements 1, 3, and 8, which will enable them to legally repair aircraft avionics equipment.
The school also offers E.T.A. certification and hopes to offer A.E.T. certification pending the programs accreditation by NCATT. Indian Hills has a FAA 147 Airframe and Powerplant program that began in 1976. The Avionics diploma program was created to provide add-on training to the 147 students and to provide skilled employees to the regions MRO industry that include: Elliott Aviation in Davenport, IA., Duncan Aviation in Lincoln, NE., and Rockwell/Collins in Cedar Rapids, IA. New enrollment for the 2013 class begins April 10th and classes start May 29th.
