Wyoming Valley Airport Hosts ‘Girls in Aviation Day’
Sep. 25—FORTY FORT — Molly Van Scoy is among the 6% of airline pilots who are female.
She and her family, which runs the Wyoming Valley Airport in Forty Fort, want to increase that statistic.
On Saturday, they hosted a sold-out Girls in Aviation Day that drew 50 young girls to the airport.
"Our mission is to expose these young girls to the possibilities within aviation, whether it be a career, a passion or hobby. We really want to try to get more girls to know that it's an option some day if they want to fly," Van Scoy, 27, of Shavertown, said.
Van Scoy, who comes from a family of pilots, including her mother, who flies for American Airlines, started her flight lessons at the Forty Fort airport at age 13.
"I've been around airplanes my whole life. My mom showed me what was possible. It's something you could do if you want to," she said.
Saturday's event, sponsored by the Northeastern Pennsylvania chapter of Women in Aviation, included young girls between the ages of 8 and 17.
"It's a good opportunity for young girls to get exposed to the possibilities within aviation. It's traditionally a male-dominated industry and we're trying to change that," said Ashley Liddic, 31, a flight instructor from Clarks Summit.
Sarah Piasecki, 10, of Duryea, was among those who attended the event. Sarah has been visiting the Forty Fort airport with her family annually for "Airport Day" since September 2015 when she took her first ride in an airplane.
"I love airplanes and I want to be a pilot," Sarah said.
