The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association launched a webinar series called Don't Get Rusty to entertain and inform pilots who are temporarily grounded due to the coronavirus pandemic restrictions.

The hosts for the webinars include AOPA You Can Fly initiative members Keith West, senior director for flight school business support and CFII; Chris Moser, senior director of flight training education, and MEI and longtime educator; and Pablo Maurelia, senior director of flight training technology and private pilot.

The trio is adept at explaining aviation concepts in a fun and light-hearted manner. Their casual approach has attracted around 1,000 participants in each of their webinars that have been held weekly since the shutdown. A new platform will allow up to 3,000 participants, and they’re looking forward to the expanded audience.

“We’re gratified at the reception we’ve received. It’s really fun presenting aviation topics in a new way and answering participant questions,” said host Keith West.

The webinar series covers aviation topics in an upbeat manner that provides an extra dose of flying lore and helps pilots who have been out of the cockpit for a while get back up to speed.

Episodes concentrate on ways you can enhance your flying skills and knowledge from home, including the use of flight simulators, building confidence with radio communications, airspace, and aeronautical charts.

Upcoming episodes include “Knocking off the rust. What could go wrong?” and “Is your airplane rusty too?”
