The work of installing Runway Safe’s Engineered Material Arresting System (EMAS) at Congonhas Airport in Brazil is moving forward. The Safety Systems are being installed at both ends of the airport’s main runway, making them the first installations in Latin America. EMAS is already used in Europe, the United States and Asia, conforming to regulating authorities.

The systems, now serving over 135 runways worldwide, have been credited with safely arresting 15 aircraft, ranging from a Cessna Citation to a Boeing 747, saving the lives of more than 350 passengers/crew members. In most cases, after extraction from the EMAS, every aircraft was able to return to service shortly after, and only the sections of the EMAS damaged by the overrunning aircraft’s tires/landing gear are to be replaced.
