The first year of Halifax Stanfield International Airport’s 10-year Airfield Restoration Program is now complete.
The 2017 work focussed on areas showing the greatest deterioration including the South Apron, Taxiway Alpha and Runway 05/23. The work was necessary to maintain the integrity of this high-traffic area and ensure long term safety and reliability.
The construction schedule, which ran from June to October, was developed to minimize the risk of the impact on flights from weather conditions such as high winds and/or low visibility. While the work on runway 05/23 was planned during a time when the lowest risk of adverse weather existed, unfavourable conditions did delay the project start date by a few days and impacted a small number of flights.

Future upgrades and maintenance operations will continue yearly. Next year’s work entails another section of Taxiway Alpha and additional apron restoration.
