The Calgary Airport Authority Breaks Ground on West Runway Rehabilitation Project

April 25, 2024
The Authority has launched the approximately $200 million project to completely overhaul and replace the aging runway, making significant regulatory, safety and environmental upgrades.

The Calgary Airport Authority (The Authority) proudly announces the commencement of Phase 1 construction for its West Runway Rehabilitation project, with the groundbreaking ceremony held April 25. This milestone marks a crucial step in ensuring the operational stability and safety of YYC Calgary International Airport.

As the construction season begins, The Authority has launched the approximately $200 million project to completely overhaul and replace the aging runway, making significant regulatory, safety and environmental upgrades, including:

  • Recycling 80 per cent of the existing runway materials, including asphalt, concrete and gravel.
  • Upgrading existing electrical fixtures to LED.
  • Future proofing for climate resilience with upgrades to storm infrastructure beneath the runway.
  • Incorporating carbon entrapment technology in the concrete used.
  • Adding Runway End Safety Areas to comply with regulatory requirements.

In support of the project, the Government of Canada is providing $57.5 million through the federal Airport Critical Infrastructure Program, with the remaining $142.5 million being fully funded by The Authority.

The rehabilitation of the West Runway will not only boost operational efficiency but also reinforce The Authority's role as a key economic catalyst of our region.

This project is just one of many we’re undertaking to ensure we are continuing to meet the needs of the people of this region and serving as an economic driver both today and for decades to come,” remarked Chris Dinsdale, President & CEO of The Calgary Airport Authority. "With the support of the Government of Canada, today’s announcement marks the beginning of a significant investment in both our airport and region.”

The project will create an estimated 300 construction jobs and take two construction seasons to complete. Through the process, sustainability remains a core focus for The Authority, demonstrated through collaboration with various contractors and consultants, to achieve Canada’s first airport project certified under the Envision® framework for sustainable infrastructure.

The Authority has diligently collaborated with a diverse range of stakeholders on design, planning and execution of this project. We extend our gratitude to our YYC Crew, the federal government, as well as to our community and our numerous partners for their unwavering support through all stages of this project.
