Terminal Capacity Increases from 23 to 40 Million at KIX

Dec. 6, 2023
The Japanese airport is preparing for the 2025 World Expo in Osaka.

VINCI Airports has inaugurated the terminal dedicated to international departures at Kansai International Airport (KIX). Modernization work was done to improve the passenger experience and increase the area dedicated to international departures. VINCI Airports has been the operator of Kansai airports since 2016 in partnership with the Japanese company Orix.

The modernization work has made it possible to increase the airport's handling capacity from 23 to 40 million international passengers, thanks to more efficient management of customs and security checkpoints.

The terminal now offers a better experience, meeting the highest standards, with a new commercial area and a design highlighting the Kansai identity. The new spaces were designed based on VINCI Airports’ “design by mood” concept: thematic islands welcome new brands, notably luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton, Dior, Chanel, Hermès, Gucci, and new offerings of catering made up of local brands and Japanese specialties.

The modernization project will help support the development of tourism in Japan, particularly within the framework of Expo 2025 in Osaka. It also illustrates the strengths of the concession model which combines both the interests of a public service with the expertise and investment capacities of the concessionaires.

“This new terminal demonstrates the know-how of the VINCI Airports teams and the added value that we bring to the countries where we operate. We develop and design innovative projects to position our airports at the forefront of passenger expectations and promote positive mobility.”

Nicolas Notebaert, CEO of VINCI Concessions and Chairman of VINCI Airports
