SLC International Reports on Sustainability Initiatives

SLCDA has published its annual Environmental, Social and Governance Report, which highlights airport efforts to minimize negative environmental impacts and adhere to the highest standards in creating a more sustainability airport.

The Salt Lake City Department of Airports (SLCDA) has published its annual Environmental, Social and Governance Report, which highlights airport efforts to minimize negative environmental impacts and adhere to the highest standards in creating a more sustainability airport.

Highlights from the report follow:

-Energy Efficiency: Achieved a decrease in overall energy use by converting to LED lighting; utilized off-site renewable energy sources and on-site solar arrays.

-GHG Reduction: Required airlines to transition to electric belt loaders, baggage tugs and push-back tractors; reduced aircraft taxi times through The New SLC airport’s parallel concourse design; added EV charging stations for private and airport-related vehicles.

-Water Conservation: Installed low-flow and sensor-based water fixtures reducing consumption by about 40%; recycled deicing fluids; planted drought-tolerant landscaping.

-Waste Management: Reduced single-use plastics through the installation of water bottle refill stations; diverted 90% of construction waste from landfills through reuse and recycling.

We are proud of our accomplishments in sustainability and continue to make it a priority, however, we recognize there is more work to be done,” said Bill Wyatt, SLCDA executive director. “We will continue to seek out new opportunities to reduce the airport’s environmental footprint.”

SLC received LEED Gold Certification in 2021 for the first phase of the construction program and is on track to achieve certification for the entire project when completed in 2026/27.
