June 3 marks the second wave of a flurry of inaugural nonstop flights taking off out of the Indianapolis International Airport (IND) – with seven new flights headed to the East Coast and Gulf Coast regions over the next week.
American Airlines will relaunch its nonstop flight to Boston today at 8 a.m., with Delta Air Lines resuming its previously halted flight also to Boston on June 5 at 6:30 a.m. American Airlines also launches its nonstop flight to Orlando on June 5 at 12:48 p.m. Southwest Airlines will launch its new nonstop flights to Myrtle Beach (9:25 a.m.) and Panama City, Fla. (10:35 a.m.) on June 6. Spirit Airlines will launch its new nonstop to Pensacola, Fla., on June 11 at 6:48 p.m., and Southwest will launch its new nonstop to Miami on June 12 at 10:05 a.m.
Flights to Panama City (Southwest) and Pensacola (Spirit Airlines) are new nonstop destinations that were previously unserved out of Indianapolis.
“Our airline partners have been nimble adjusting to the flow of travel, and creating opportunities to fit the changing demands and interests of travelers – particularly as we begin to emerge from the global pandemic,” said Indianapolis Airport Authority Executive Director Mario Rodriguez. “We’re seeing high demand for domestic leisure travel with Florida as a particularly popular vacation destination.”
This series of new nonstops comes on the heels of six inaugural flights that launched out of the Indy airport just last week, including the launch of Sun Country Airlines as the Indianapolis International Airport’s newest commercial air service.
Already this year, the Indy airport announced 15 new nonstop flights coming to Indianapolis between May and September, compared to only five new flight announcements made overall in 2020.
Indy airport’s COVID-19 precautions earn it an Airport Health Accreditation
The Indianapolis International Airport is working diligently to ensure a safe and healthy travel experience for Hoosiers. Late last year the Indy airport was recognized with the Airports Council International’s Global Airport Health Accreditation for its efforts during the pandemic.
Since March 2020, the Indianapolis Airport Authority has implemented an abundance of measures throughout the terminal and airport campus to help protect the traveling public and airport employees, including increased cleanliness measures, social distancing signage and touchless transactions whenever possible. In addition, face masks must be worn at the Indy airport, in accordance with the federal Department of Homeland Security requirement.
