Winnipeg Airports Authority is celebrating another successful crop in support of Winnipeg Harvest.
WAA employees spent the morning digging 1,038 pounds of potatoes from the Harvest Garden located on the campus of Winnipeg Richardson International Airport. The yield adds to the 528 pounds of carrots, onions and beets picked and donated to Winnipeg Harvest last month.
“Community is deeply rooted within everything we do here at the airport,” said Barry Rempel, president and CEO of WAA. “We pride ourselves on serving not just travellers but our entire region. This is just one of the many ways our team gives back to support our community and help in its development.”
Employees take time out of their day throughout the summer to help plant, tend and harvest the garden. They’re also invited to donate any extra crops grown in their own personal gardens.
Since 1997, WAA has donated 64,754 pounds of vegetables to Winnipeg Harvest through its GrowA-Row program to help feed families in need. Continuing the decades-long tradition was of paramount importance this year due to the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the community.
“This year’s gardening season was more important than ever,” said Keren Taylor-Hughes, CEO of Winnipeg Harvest. “Due to COVID-19, we were unable to plant our garden at Harvest, losing out on a valuable resource of fresh vegetables for Harvest hampers. The veggies harvested by WAA employees filled this gap providing nutritious foods for thousands of families in need across the province. We are so thankful to WAA for nourishing our community.”
