ACI Congratulates Peru for Authorizing the Restart of Air Transport

July 7, 2020

ACI congratulates the Government of Peru on its decision to authorize the restart of domestic operations from July 15.

“As has been demonstrated in other countries in the region, the close collaboration between the Government, airports and airlines has allowed the development of protocols and the necessary conditions for the safely reactivation of air transport activities. So far, all operations have been carried out in these countries without problems”, said Rafael Echevarne, ACI-LAC Director General.

"We encourage other countries in the region to follow the example of the Peruvian government and authorize the reactivation of air transport, which is critical for the socio-economic development of all the countries in Latin America and the Caribbean." Mr. Echevarne added.

More than seven million jobs and USD 156 billion depend on the aviation industry, representing 2.8% of the total employment and 3.3% of the region ́s GDP as a whole. In the case of Peru, 4.4 million tourists visit the country every year, the majority of whom access by air, contributing 2.6% of the country's GDP. Air transport and tourism contribute USD 5,000 million of added value to the country's economy.

It is important to remember that during all this time the Peruvian airports have not paralyzed their activity and have continued operating cargo flights, supporting humanitarian flights and the transfer of medical personnel and equipment to the various regions of the country. Now, after an articulated coordination with the different actors involved, airports are ready to serve regular passenger flights again after carefully implementing the health protocols for the protection of airport staff and passengers.
