Oakland International Airport Welcomes 1.24M Passengers in July

Aug. 25, 2017

Oakland International Airport (OAK) on Aug. 25, reports that it served 1,235,511 passengers in July, an increase of 103,320 passengers (9.1 percent) over the prior year. The increase is based upon 5.3 percent more flight operations and 7.9 percent more seats.  This is OAK’s highest monthly passenger volume recorded since August 2007.

While domestic passenger volume increased by 4.3 percent, OAK’s international passenger volume increased 151 percent, reflecting added Norwegian and Volaris flights, and new international service operated by Southwest Airlines, Level, and British Airways.

Port of Oakland Director of Aviation, Bryant L. Francis said, “We continue to be pleased with the growing tally of consecutive monthly passenger gains reported since December 2013. This strong increase is particularly meaningful in July, which is traditionally busy due to holiday and summer vacation travel. The ongoing pattern of growth at OAK is an indication of confidence from our customers and airline partners.”

Airport officials noted that traffic on Southwest Airlines – OAK’s largest carrier – increased 5.7 percent over last year.  July was the first full month of Southwest’s new service from OAK to Newark/New York City, which began in June. Southwest accounted for 64.7 percent of OAK’s total passenger traffic volume during the month.

July was also the first full month of new service to Barcelona from Oakland by both Norwegian and Level.

The Airport saw 12.1 million annual passengers in 2016, and expects more than 13 million passengers in 2017.
