Alaska Airlines Announces Three New Nonstop Destinations From Silicon Valley’s Airport

March 9, 2017

Alaska Airlines is growing its footprint at Mineta San Jose International Airport and the Bay Area with its announcement March 9, of nonstop service between San Jose and three new destinations for the airline.

Alaska will introduce daily service to Tucson, a new destination for Silicon Valley’s airport, beginning Aug. 28, and will launch service to Austin with daily flights beginning Aug. 28. The carrier is also initiating four flights daily to Los Angeles (LAX) starting September 20. With this announcement, Alaska will offer 19 nonstop destinations, the largest number of nonstop destinations among all SJC carriers.

“Our focus city of San Jose is a key part of our Bay Area growth strategy and allows us to focus on the unique needs of Silicon Valley residents, while bringing low fares and choice to everyone living in the Bay Area metropolitan area,” said John Kirby, Alaska Airlines’ vice president of capacity planning. “With this announcement, Alaska Airlines and Virgin America will serve 19 of the top 25 destinations for Bay Area travelers.”

The announcement of the new San Jose flights, along with 10 new flights at San Francisco International Airport to be operated by Virgin America and Alaska, marks the single largest new market announcement in Alaska Airlines history.

"I thank Alaska Airlines for continuing to provide Silicon Valley business and leisure travelers with nonstop flights to prime destinations, both in the U.S. and Mexico," said Mayor Sam Liccardo. "Alaska's ongoing growth at SJC is impressive, and I thank CEO Brad Tilden and his management team for their investments in San Jose and their commitment to San Jose as a focus city."

The new flights build on previously announced Alaska Airlines SJC routes, including daily service into the New York area with SJC‐Newark starting March 12, and three daily flights to Burbank starting March 16.

"Alaska Airlines has been our long time partner and we're pleased to see their ongoing investment in offering the nonstop destinations and frequencies to the places Silicon Valley travelers want to go," said Director of Aviation Kim Becker. "In turn, we continue to invest in our facilities and services so passengers on Alaska and our other 14 airlines have the best travel experience possible."
