BWI Marshall Airport hit a new all-time monthly record for passengers in June.
Maryland Department of Transportation records show more than 2.6 million commercial passengers flew through the airport during the first month of summer, an increase of 11% over June 2023, Gov. Wes Moore said Tuesday.
Fiscal year 2024 was also a record-breaking year for BWI with just over 27 million passengers, up from 24.7 million in the previous fiscal year, according to Jonathan Dean, a spokesperson for the airport. With about 300 daily nonstop departures to more than 80 domestic and international destinations, BWI is the busiest airport in the National Capital region, which includes Washington D.C. and parts of Virginia and Maryland.
“This record-setting performance affirms our strength, and our administration remains committed to enhancing convenient, efficient airport travel that will continue to position Maryland as a gateway to the nation and to the world,” Moore, a Democrat, said in a news release.
The airport contributes $11.3 billion in economic impact. BWI and its visitors produce and support more than 107,000 jobs throughout the state and the region.
“These new records reflect the strong demand for air travel, along with the resilience of the aviation industry,” BWI Marshall Airport Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer Ricky Smith said in the release. “Our airport has an expanding route network and growth in leisure and business travel.”
These aren’t the only records BWI has set recently. More than 1.3 million passengers traveled on international flights in 2023, a new annual record, the airport announced in March.
Several capital projects are underway as well, including the Concourse A/B Connector, a new baggage handling system, expanded seating at gates and new restrooms.
