Albuquerque International Sunport Adds New Service

Oct. 18, 2023

Oct. 17—The Albuquerque International Sunport on Tuesday announced the addition of Sun Country Airlines, which will fly a twice-weekly, nonstop service between Albuquerque and the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

The service is expected to start in June 2024 and will be offered year round, according to the city of Albuquerque.

Sun Country Airlines new service in Albuquerque ads another low-cost carrier to the Sunport, which is New Mexico's largest commercial airport and sees more than five million passengers per year. Sun Country Airlines will give the Sunport eight major carriers.

The Airline on Tuesday announced it was expanding service to eight additional domestic cities, including Albuquerque, and two Canadian destinations.

"We have more than doubled our nonstop destinations for customers flying out of MSP in the last five years and we are thrilled to offer these unique new offerings spanning the continent from Quebec to New Mexico," Grant Whitney, senior vice president and chief revenue officer for Sun Country Airlines, which is based in Minnesota, said in a prepared statement.

Richard McCurley, the director of Aviation for the city, said the new arrival comes as the Sunport has major renovations planned. Earlier this year, work got started on an $87 million renovation project called the "Dream of Flight."

"This alliance could not have come at a better time as we undergo a major terminal renovation, modernize the Sunport and take the passenger experience to the next level," McCurley said in a statement. "We look forward to welcoming travelers from the Heartland of America."
