One person died and another was critically injured after a small plane they were flying in crashed at the San Rafael Airport on Smith Ranch Road Saturday night, authorities say. The pair were the only passengers on the airplane.
According to the Marin County Sheriff’s office, the plane, which originated in Minden, Nevada, about 15 miles east of Lake Tahoe, crashed in a marsh at the east end of the runway sometime around 11 p.m. on Saturday.
One of the two people aboard was pronounced dead at the scene. The second was transported to a local hospital, where they were in critical condition. Authorities have not identified the person who was killed.
Early details indicate the plane’s tail fin struck electrical lines during the crash, which led to a power outage affecting nearly 2,000 PG&E customers.
The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash.
