New Diverse Inside|Out Artwork in Metro Airport Terminal Turning Heads

Oct. 6, 2022

Oct. 5—The Detroit Institute of Arts experienced such success with its Inside/Out artistic display at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, officials are refreshing the display and adding to its exhibition.

The DIA announced the recent refresh of the artwork inside the Warren C. Evans terminal Wednesday.

Travelers from around the world have an opportunity to admire five new replicated contemporary works from the DIA while breezing through the terminal.

According to the DIA, the five pieces stand out from the rest, as they are more diverse, contemporary pieces from the DIA's collection.

The following can be found in addition to the works already turning heads in the airport:

Movement #27 by Kwesi Owusu-Ankomah,

Cycles by Norval Morrisseau,

Untitled by Detroit's own Al Loving

Mexican Pueblo, Jose Clemente Orozco

Flowers in a Vase, Rachel Ruysch

Noah's Ark: Genesis, Charles McGee

Julie McFarland, Executive Director, Public Affairs and Community Engagement, expressed how excited the DIA is about enhancing the diversity of the reproductions in the terminal.

"While the Inside|Out program is traditionally installed in outdoor locations across the tri-county region, we have found that it also fits nicely into the large open spaces the airport terminal provides and is enjoyed by not only local travelers, but those well beyond Michigan," McFarland said.

Since everyone doesn't have an opportunity to head over to the DIA after coming into Metro Airport, Salvador Salort-Pons, director, said it is a benefit to offer it in the airport so the opportunity isn't missed.

"That's why we were so excited about this partnership with DTW, to bring these wonderful works to everyone who steps foot in this terminal," Salort-Pons said. "Our airport is a high-volume connecting flight location and many people spend time here throughout the year. Having fresh new pieces in the airport builds interest and sparks conversation amongst travelers, and that is exactly what we want."

The Inside|Out 2022 program has installations in locations throughout the tri-county area, which also includes River Rouge.
