Tuscaloosa National Airport is getting more than $1.053 million to expand its terminal.
The U.S. Department of Transportation is awarding the discretionary grant money through the American Rescue Plan, which will go toward the airport’s terminal apron pavement and connecting taxiways, as well as an area serving the rescue and firefighting facility.
It involves 8,500 tons of asphalt mix pavement materials and about 600 tons of cement.
Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox said the airport “plays a significant role in our community’s economy and the improvements afforded by this grant allocation will help accelerate our growth now and into the future.”
The 724-acre airport is home to 110 aircraft and 62 hangars. A 2021 master plan for the airport identified several areas for expansion and development to help the region continue its economic development.
U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell called the work “important improvements.”
“As the only member of the Alabama delegation to vote in favor of the American Rescue Plan, I am thrilled to see our cities and towns benefiting from such critical improvements,” she said.
