New York Air Show May be Moved to Orange County Airport this Year

July 22, 2020

As the New York International Air Show is looming, details of location and safety guidelines are still in limbo.

While the air show has been set on the weekend of Aug. 29-30, the organizer is still working through a “complex process of bringing the 2020 edition of the show together in the era of social distancing,” according to the event website.

Every year performers wow tens of thousands of spectators at the show at its usual site at Stewart International Airport. But this year the county hopes to move it the Orange County Airport in Montgomery, according to Orange County spokesman Justin Rodriguez. He said further details about the event are still being discussed and have not been finalized.

On the event’s Facebook page, some ticket buyers are looking forward to attending the air show, while others expressed their safety concerns as many regionwide events have been canceled amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Although news reports and sources have pointed out the possibility that the show may be moving to a location other than its usual site at Stewart International Airport, Chris Dirato, director of the public relations of the event, said the organizer is still working with the county and state agencies on finalizing safety guidelines. He added an official announcement will be released soon, but did not specify the timeline.

“Nothing is set in stone yet,” Dirato said, referring the the event location.

Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus was previously quoted in a news report on Monday saying reduced capacity and a drive-in approach are part of the discussion underway.
