No Shutdown Yet for Berlin's Tegel Airport

June 4, 2020

Berlin (dpa) - Berlin's Tegel airport will remain open for the time being, with passenger numbers expected to rise after mid-June when Germany will lift its travel warnings for almost all European countries.

Airport boss Engelbert Luetke Daldrup said both airports servicing the German capital - Tegel and Schoenefeld - would be in operation.

"This will mean we can offer the necessary space while keeping to coronavirus restrictions," he said.

Tegel was meant to have stopped operations on June 15, the same day that travel warnings are set to be lifted.

Coronavirus restrictions imposed in March meant that hardly anyone was flying, and Luetke Daldrup had previously planned to concentrate more air travel in the Schoenefeld hub.

Centrally located Tegel saw 24 million passengers in 2019, compared to 11 million in the smaller Schoenefeld airport, which lies to the south-east of the capital.

Tegel is still due to shut by the end of the year. The new BER hub is set to open on October 31, with the last Tegel flight taking off on November 8.
