The new airport in Istanbul served 12.2 million passengers from January through March 2020, the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure told Trend.
During the reporting period, 3.1 million were served on domestic flights, 9.1 million passengers on international flights.
The ministry noted that during the same period 86,527 flights were carried out through the new Istanbul airport, including 22,080 on domestic routes, 64,447 on international flights.
"From January through February 2020, the volume of freight traffic through the new Istanbul airport amounted to 352,625 tons, of which 29,388 accounted for domestic, 323,237 for international flights", the ministry said.
New Istanbul Airport served 52,578 passengers in 2019.
On October 29, 2018, the opening ceremony of the new airport was held in Istanbul, which was attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Mehmet Jahit Turhan.
Istanbul's third airport is located in the northern part of the city.
