Georgian Kutaisi Airport to be One of Leading Airports in Terms of Infrastructure: Minister

Feb. 17, 2020

Kutaisi International Airport will become one of the leading ones, Georgian Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Natia Turnava said, Trend reports with reference to Georgian media.

According to her, the increase in the number of passengers at the Kutaisi airport is the result of the right policy and management of the government in the field of aviation.

"It is very honorable that the Kutaisi international airport, which remains under state control, is so successful. Indeed, the passenger growth rate is very high, and this was facilitated by our policy, including the introduction of low-cost airlines and the increase in flights of existing low-cost airlines," noted Turnava.

According to her, the construction of a new terminal is ending in the fall of 2020, and Kutaisi Airport will become one of the leading airports in terms of infrastructure.

Meanwhile, according to information published on the website of the European International Council of Airports, Kutaisi Airport ranked second in Europe in terms of passenger growth.

In January 2020, Georgian airports served 314,079 passengers, which is three percent less compared to the same period last year.

Reportedly, while passenger traffic was growing at Kutaisi and Batumi international airports, there was a decrease at Tbilisi International Airport.

In January 2020, Tbilisi International Airport served 211,590 passengers (a decrease of 16 percent compared to January 2019), Kutaisi International Airport – 79,759 passengers (an increase of 43 percent), Batumi International Airport – 22,001 passengers (an increase of 38 percent).
